The 500

You will hear a lot of folks say that the Cup Season really gets started next week in Atlanta.  I know what they mean.  Everything they do at Daytona is so much different than the rest of the tracks, save Dega, that it’s kind of a one off.  On the other hand you hear those same folks refer to it as the “Super Bowl” of NASCAR.  It’s both and I love it!  I haven’t missed, thanks to the greatest invention in modern history the DVR, a minute of on track activity.

There are some really fast cars!  None seems faster than Dale Jr’s.  He is the odds on favorite to win, but he won’t.  I’d like him to because as you know I’m a unabashed HMS and Chevy fan!  Jr will have the best piece in the race but my prediction is that he will get caught up in something late in the race, nothing serious, that will take him out of it.

A young man, a series rookie, who will have shown speed all day will make a move to the lead coming into the tri oval, block a late move by Denny Hamlin, and take the checkered flag.  He will pull the iconic car into Victory lane, jump out and thank his team, sponsors and Ford!  That’s right the young Ryan Blaney will win the 2016 500.  For a week people will talk about how the Wood brothers got cheated out of a charter.  It will be a great start to a new season and new era!

Talk to you soon!

Truck Series

I am a fan of the Truck Series, how about you?  Today I was fortunate enough to have the chance to catch some Truck Series practice on television from Daytona.  I think as a whole the series is on the way up.  There are some strong teams with some great young drivers. It will only be a matter of time before they institute a Charter system like the Cup series has in Xfinity and Truck.  They’ll have too.  The purses are too small is it is and they can’t keep spreading it out among teams that show up, run a few laps and then leave.  The series will probably drop down to maybe 25 trucks, give charters to and increase the winnings for the top 18 or so and keep the series going in the right direction.

This will mean that there are several teams who show up now every race and make just enough to come back the following week and do it again who will be out of business.  This may sound harsh but that has been a long time coming.  Would you like to go to work, stay all day, work hard, do what was necessary to complete your work and then share your salary with someone who came in late, stayed an hour, and did nothing while he was there?  Me either.

For any organization to survive it must evolve and make changes to meet the current demands.  NASCAR has needed to increase the competition for a while now and that is what they are doing.  So you and I will be able to see quality teams continue to compete.  Gibbs, Thorsport, BKR, KBR, JR Motorsports will all be able to continue to field competitive trucks and as such we will see good competitive racing with young drivers on the way up.

I know a lot of you think its great that small teams can come and compete but lets be honest, its not great.  They don’t win and they never will.  As much as you may think its great, its bad for the sport.

Tomorrow will be my first race picks for the Daytona 500.

Sports Hero

So, I have been watching the story about Peyton Manning and the alleged incident between he and an esteemed Athletic Health Professional while he was at the University of Tennessee.  Now let me be clear, I am well aware that these are allegations.

If what is alleged happened while he was a member of the football team really happened then his “legacy” should be tarnished forever but thats not enough.  In addition to what allegedly happened, as a father of three daughters I can’t even write it here, it appears that he and his father decided to get out in front of the incident before they cashed in again on their name and wrote a book.  In this book they clearly breached a confidentiality agreement by defaming this woman again causing her to file suit.

Now I am a grown man and as such I have long realized that nobody could possibly be the person Peyton Manning has been represented to be, nobody is that good.  We all know that but probably won’t all admit it.  I have long ago stopped being disappointed by people, it is liberating.

Heres the thing.  If these things are true then Peyton isn’t just “not as good as he seems to be”, he is a bad person.  There is a huge difference and again we all know that difference.  He and his family have allegedly gone out of their way to hurt someone.

Maybe people should stop looking to people who have been pampered and propped up their entire lives to be their hero or role model or person who represents all things good.  Peyton Manning can throw a football and read a defense and is so bent on being the best he is willing to put his god given gifts into being the best quarterback in the NFL.  Is that really something admirable?  I don’t think so, I think its entertainment plain and simple.  So now, allegedly, that entertainment did terrible things.  Time to find new entertainment.  If what he allegedly did is true he should pay as severe a penalty as possible.

I know men and women who serve you everyday.  They keep you safe when you can’t keep yourself safe.  Believe me there are situations that most of you are not prepared to deal with nor would you want to.  They are out there, some in uniform some not.  Some of these men and women are a little rough around the edges.  They might use rough language, might be at times a little abrasive but they are taking care of you.  They literally risk their lives everyday to help you.  Now I know thats not as dangerous as staring down a defensive blitz?  They don’t do commercials or purport to be squeaky clean but they are doing something real.  Think about it.

Talk to you soon

Pole Position

So Chase Elliot, at the ripe age of 20, will be on the pole when the Green flag drops at Daytona next weekend.  Outstanding!!!

I think that the infusion of young men into the Cup series is one of the many things the sport needs to stay relevant and continue to grow.  Men my age can relate to Jimmie, Junior, Kevin Harvick, and Matt Kenseth.  Guys who are 20 see them as old men to whom they can’t relate.  Chase Elliot, Chris Buesher, Ryan Blaney those are the drivers who will bring and keep young people interested in the sport.  That’s what we need.

NASCAR and the team owners also smartened up and started sharing the money.  That is really what this charter system comes down to.  Finally teams are worth something and maybe that means in the not to distant future there will be more than a handful of cars that can win a race.  This is another thing that will keep new fans interested in the sport.  I’m a fan and am not going anywhere but who really wants to see the same cars win week in and week out.  More teams that can win and not just be there to fill out a spot is a good, good thing.

Finally, how about that Daytona rising!  I can’t wait to get to Daytona and see a race again. This is another step in the right direction.  Making the fan experience great will keep people in the seats race after race.

Great job to NASCAR and Team owners.  In my opinion things are headed in the right direction.

Sandrail

So, here we go.  In Just over a week cars will be on the tack in Daytona and in 17 days the 2016 NASCAR season will begin with the Daytona 500.  The “offseason” went by quickly but I, as I am sure you are, am ready for some racing.  I’m ready to see cars on the track, ready to see who has speed and who doesn’t.  Which teams will have made the offseason preparation necessary to be competitive with the new low downforce package.  My bet is on Hendrick but I am a bit biased.

I love NASCR racing and everything that comes with it.  I love the strategy involved and the engineering and the talent it takes to be competitive.  I don’t however like that the biggest story going into the season is Tony Stewart’s recent injury.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I hope Tony Stewart is OK, I hope that his injuries are not too severe.  I would never, ever want to see anyone hurt.  Ever!  I just want T0ny to stop putting himself in these situations.  I don’t know Tony but I’m not a fan.  I think I have seen him publicly treat people poorly too many times, especially members of the media.  I also think he is not a person who learns from his past mistakes.  No need for me to document his issues over the past several years or his issues from years before that.  If you are a NASCR fan you know what they are.

I recently had lunch with a friend of mine who is a little older than I am.  We worked together for several years and had similar careers.  He’s 60 now but still wants to be 35.  He wants to be overseas doing something “dangerous” he told me.  I can understand that, I too sometimes struggle with the fact that Father Time has won, but he has.  My friend and Tony could both, I think, use the same advise.  They are fortunate, very fortunate to be where they are in life.  Let it be enough.  No more Sprint Cars, no more Sandrails.  No more work overseas.  Some things are for young men and some things are for older men, there is no shame in that.  NONE!

I hope Tony heals quickly and I hope he is in the 14 when the green flag drops at Daytona!  I hope he takes care of himself.
