So, here we go. In Just over a week cars will be on the tack in Daytona and in 17 days the 2016 NASCAR season will begin with the Daytona 500. The “offseason” went by quickly but I, as I am sure you are, am ready for some racing. I’m ready to see cars on the track, ready to see who has speed and who doesn’t. Which teams will have made the offseason preparation necessary to be competitive with the new low downforce package. My bet is on Hendrick but I am a bit biased.
I love NASCR racing and everything that comes with it. I love the strategy involved and the engineering and the talent it takes to be competitive. I don’t however like that the biggest story going into the season is Tony Stewart’s recent injury. Now, don’t get me wrong. I hope Tony Stewart is OK, I hope that his injuries are not too severe. I would never, ever want to see anyone hurt. Ever! I just want T0ny to stop putting himself in these situations. I don’t know Tony but I’m not a fan. I think I have seen him publicly treat people poorly too many times, especially members of the media. I also think he is not a person who learns from his past mistakes. No need for me to document his issues over the past several years or his issues from years before that. If you are a NASCR fan you know what they are.
I recently had lunch with a friend of mine who is a little older than I am. We worked together for several years and had similar careers. He’s 60 now but still wants to be 35. He wants to be overseas doing something “dangerous” he told me. I can understand that, I too sometimes struggle with the fact that Father Time has won, but he has. My friend and Tony could both, I think, use the same advise. They are fortunate, very fortunate to be where they are in life. Let it be enough. No more Sprint Cars, no more Sandrails. No more work overseas. Some things are for young men and some things are for older men, there is no shame in that. NONE!
I hope Tony heals quickly and I hope he is in the 14 when the green flag drops at Daytona! I hope he takes care of himself.
